Glaetzer is a name historically synonymous with the Barossa, but is now also famed for world-class Pinot Noir and Shiraz from Tasmania. Nick is a 6th generation vigneron who cut his teeth in the Barossa cellars of his family’s Glaetzer Wines before expanding his horizons by also working vintages in Margaret River, the Hunter, the Pfalz region of Germany, Burgundy and Languedoc. His global experiences gave Nick a love of pinot noir, finally drawing him to settle in Tasmania. In 2008, he set up Glaetzer-Dixon Family Winemakers, initially sharing winemaking facilities at Frogmore Creek and Moorilla before moving to a purpose-built urban cellar in a former ice factory on the edge of Hobart’s CBD. Glaetzer-Dixon sources grapes from around a dozen growers across Tasmania, mostly in the Coal River and Upper Derwent valleys in the south and Tamar Valley in the north. Some of these growers were the pioneers of the Tasmanian wine industry, establishing their vineyards in the early 1970s. Nick’s vision for the future has seen him plant a 12ha vineyard at Tea Tree in the Coal River Valley, with the first harvest in 2024.
Nick Glaetzer is a previous Jimmy Watson Trophy winner, AGTW Young Winemaker of the Year, and recognised as a Future 50 Winemaker by the International Wine and Spirit Education Trust (WSET). A real overachiever, leveraging early success, Nick has gone on to design and build his own urban winery in Hobart and plant a stunning 12ha vineyard in the Coal River Valley. Today, the former boy from the Barossa is a highly regarded figure in Tasmanian winemaking, often quoted in media articles regarding the state’s wine industry.
