Penley Estate

McLaren Vale, SA

Penley Estate is a story shaped by bold personalities, pioneering women, and a legacy that stretches back to 1844, yet its true spark ignited in 1945 with a red sports car and a chance meeting between Reginald Lester Tolley and Judith Anne Penfold Hyland. What followed was the merging of two remarkable winemaking dynasties, eventually leading their children to forge Penley Estate as we know it today. From planting Cabernet vines in Coonawarra and winning gold with their first Phoenix release, to building a state-of-the-art winery and expanding their vineyards, Penley has always embodied a fearless commitment to craft, character, and the distinct terroir of the region. As the years evolved, so too did Penley Estate, guided by strong women whose vision and resilience defined generations. Instead of letting tradition fade, the family chose reinvention: reimagining their wines with contemporary style while honouring the essence that made them iconic. Today, Penley Estate produces expressive, modern Coonawarra wines that balance heritage with a refreshed, confident edge. Every bottle carries a hint of romance, rebellion and elegance, echoing the family matriarch’s enduring mantra: “Grow up and be fascinating.”

Winemakers: Kate Goodman

Passion. Spontaneity. Soul. Just a few words that come to mind when we get ready to introduce Penley winemaker, Kate Goodman. Kate is one of Australia's best contemporary winemakers. Wineries such as Wirra Wirra (McLaren Vale), Tim Kanppstein (Clare Valley), Seppelt (Great Western), and Punt Road (Yarra Valley) have all benefited from Kate's brilliance. There is no denying the talent and absolute harmony when it comes to Kate and the winery, which Penley has witnessed each year since she started in 2016. Her investment in the wine is what has fed Penley’s evolution into creating some spectacular contemporary varietals. And with the addition of winemaker Lauren Hansen, it's as though they have taken a mighty breath of fresh Coonawarra air and are totally inspired.
